Who we are
The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) is a registered organization of German higher education institutions and their student unions. Our task is to promote cooperation and exchange between foreign and German universities from undergraduate to postdoctoral research levels. In order to achieve this goal, we receive public funds mainly from the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Research.
Our headquarters in Germany is located in Bonn. In addition to Tokyo, there are DAAD branch offices in Beijing, Cairo, Hanoi, Jakarta, London, Mexico, Moscow, Nairobi, New Delhi, New York City, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Warsawas well as around 50 Information Centers all over the world.
The Tokyo branch office was founded in 1978 to promote the academic exchange between Germany and Japan. Since October 2014 Dr. habil. Ursula Toyka has been Resident Director of the branch office in Tokyo.
What we offer
We support German citizens as well as foreigners who plan to study or do research in Germany by providing general information about the academic landscape in Germany and by offering different types of scholarships. Furthermore, we support promotional activities of German universities that target an international audience, e.g. by organizing and participating in education fairs and events all over the world.
